A community in motion: leadership, memory and the future of UARU in the United Kingdom<\/h1>\n

Edition 17 of UARU News<\/strong> brings together some of the most significant
\nmoments of this year for the Angolan community in the United Kingdom: the confirmation
\nof Clemente Chiquete<\/strong> as president of the Union of Angolans in the UK,
\nthe celebration of 50 years of Angola\u2019s independence<\/strong> in London, the
\ndemocratic process that established 28 July as the Day of the Angolan Community
\nin the UK<\/strong>, and the community\u2019s participation in the
\nRemembrance Day<\/strong> ceremonies in Harrow.<\/p>\n

Taken together, these events tell a single story: that of a diaspora that has learned
\nto organise itself, defend its voice and build a shared future, honouring the past
\nwhile looking with hope towards the next generations.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Extraordinary assembly confirms continuity of Clemente Chiquete<\/h2>\n

On Saturday, 11 October 2025<\/strong>, UARU members gathered for an extraordinary
\nassembly at 55 Willington Road, in London. From early afternoon until the end of the
\nday, men and women of different ages filled the hall with one clear purpose:
\nto decide, democratically, who should lead the next stage of the organisation.<\/p>\n

The vote confirmed the continuity of Clemente Chiquete<\/strong> as president
\nof the Union of Angolans in the United Kingdom. The result was more than an
\nadministrative choice; it was a demonstration of trust in the path of a leadership
\nthat has sought to balance transparency, social inclusion and engagement
\nwith the younger generation<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

In his address, the president acknowledged mistakes, but emphasised the progress
\nalready made. He highlighted as a priority a stronger connection with young
\npeople<\/strong>: working alongside them, listening to their ideas and creating safe
\nspaces for participation. The message was welcomed with applause and renewed the
\ncollective commitment to making UARU a truly open home, where different opinions
\ncan coexist without breaking unity.<\/p>\n

50 years of independence: Angola celebrated in the heart of London<\/h2>\n

A few days later the emotions moved to a vibrant hall in central London, where around
\n240 members of the community and friends of Angola<\/strong> gathered to celebrate
\n50 years of independence<\/strong>. The occasion was far more than a historic
\nanniversary; it was a reunion with memory, culture and the homesickness felt by those
\nwho are building their lives far from the land where they were born.<\/p>\n

Inside the hall, colourful fabrics, familiar smells and drums<\/strong>
\ntransformed the London cold into a fragment of Luanda, Benguela, Huambo and so many
\nother cities. The presence of Ambassador Jos\u00e9 Patr\u00edcio<\/strong> added solemnity
\nto an evening marked by songs, traditional rhythms and moments of shared emotion that
\nrecalled the country which, half a century ago, won its freedom.<\/p>\n

Among the many traditional outfits presented, one in particular caught everyone\u2019s eye.
\nIt combined elements of the Lunda<\/strong> and Bakongo<\/strong> cultures:
\na skirt made of printed fabrics such as mulele ua jiponda<\/em>, mulele ua xaxi<\/em>
\nand mulele ua tandu<\/em>, adorned with beads and intense colours. The posture of
\nthe woman wearing it \u2013 confident, calm and deeply rooted \u2013 turned the moment into a
\nvisual statement of belonging and resilience.<\/p>\n

The celebration was not just about aesthetics; it was also educational.
\nEvery outfit, every song and each conversation reminded us that Angolan
\nculture is not a souvenir from the past, but a living force that continues
\nto inspire, unite and educate both those who live in Angola and those who
\nare shaping their story in the diaspora.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

28 July: a new Day of the Angolan Community in the UK<\/h2>\n

If the 50th independence celebration spoke to the heart, the process that established
\n28 July as the Day of the Angolan Community in the United Kingdom<\/strong> spoke
\nto the mind and to our sense of collective responsibility. On a rainy day, the community
\norganised the largest democratic exercise ever seen in the Angolan diaspora:
\n1,144 participants<\/strong>, of whom 1,100 voted online and 44 in person.<\/p>\n

The choice of 28 July<\/strong>, with 53.13% of the votes, reflects the desire to
\ncelebrate Angolan identity in an open, fair and participatory way. The president of
\nthe voting desk, Am\u00e2ndio Duarte<\/strong>, highlighted that the date recovers the
\npride of being Angolan and sets out a model of community governance that can inspire
\nother African diasporas.<\/p>\n

Observers from Cabo Verde and Mozambique were also present, reinforcing the broader
\nAfrican dimension of the moment. As one participant put it, the experience served as
\na \u201clighthouse\u201d for other migrant communities, showing that
\nparticipatory democracy strengthens bonds and creates a real sense of belonging<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

At the end of the day, between applause and tears, the words of
\nAnast\u00e1cio da Cruz<\/strong> summed up the feeling in the room:
\n\u201cThe ghetto won because we chose hope over division.\u201d<\/em> From now on,
\n28 July will be dedicated to debates about cultural identity, performances
\nof Angolan music and educational activities for young people \u2013 a yearly
\nritual of affirmation<\/strong> for the community.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Remembrance Day in Harrow: memory, sacrifice and inclusion<\/h2>\n

The participation of the Angolan community in Remembrance Day<\/strong> in Harrow
\nbrought another important layer to this edition: a reflection on the place of minorities
\nin the history of the United Kingdom. Far from the Cenotaph in Westminster, local
\nceremonies like the one in Harrow strengthen social cohesion and recall the contribution
\nof millions of people from former colonies and from across the Commonwealth.<\/p>\n

In Harrow, one of the most emotional moments was the laying of a wreath by the
\nMayor<\/strong>, in memory of the soldiers who lost their lives in conflict.
\nThis gesture, repeated in towns and cities across the country, symbolises the nation\u2019s
\ngratitude to all those who served \u2013 regardless of their origin or skin colour.<\/p>\n

For the Angolan community, this day is also a call to reflection<\/strong>.
\nBy taking part in the ceremonies, the diaspora claims its place in the British
\nnarrative and reminds us that the story of migration is also a story of service,
\nsacrifice and defence of democracy. It is a powerful message for younger
\ngenerations, who learn that Angolan identity can walk hand in hand with civic
\nresponsibility in the country they now call home.<\/p>\n

How was this Angolan community in the UK built?<\/h2>\n

One of the faces that marked the early stages of the community\u2019s organisation.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

The final part of this edition looks back and asks: how did we get here?<\/strong>
\nThe answer runs through neighbourhoods such as Tottenham, Brixton, Paddington and
\nWembley, which in the 1980s became genuine places of refuge for those fleeing war
\nor seeking better opportunities.<\/p>\n

Tottenham was the territory of everyday survival, with shared houses and rooms
\nthat became trenches against loneliness. Brixton, with its African and Caribbean
\npulse, turned into the cultural heart where the diaspora learned to share both
\npain and achievement. Paddington became a family backyard \u2013 the arrival point for
\nmany asylum seekers and the birthplace of the first Angolan sports teams. Wembley,
\nfinally, symbolised victory: every document obtained was celebrated as if someone
\nhad scored in a packed stadium.<\/p>\n

The following decades were marked by difficulties with asylum procedures, economic
\nuncertainty and delays in benefits. But they were also years of
\ncreativity and solidarity<\/strong>: football clubs, associations, places of
\nworship and cultural initiatives emerged, shaping the community \u201clike clay in the
\nhands of a potter\u201d.<\/p>\n

From 1997 onwards, changes to migration policy were a turning point. With new
\nopportunities to work, study and move more freely, the Angolan community stopped
\nbeing almost invisible and became an active part of London\u2019s landscape, contributing
\nin many areas of knowledge, culture and the economy.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

From memory to action: what this edition tells us about the future<\/h2>\n

Seen together, the stories in this edition of UARU News show a community that has
\nlearned to participate, celebrate and question<\/strong>. The continuity of a
\nleadership chosen in assembly, the independence celebration, the democratic process
\nthat created the 28 July Community Day and the presence at Remembrance Day in Harrow
\nall point in the same direction: building a mature community, aware of its history
\nand determined to be the protagonist of its own future.<\/p>\n

The challenge now is to turn these moments into long-term commitments: keeping
\nparticipation in assemblies alive, involving young people in every decision,
\nusing 28 July as a platform for cultural and civic education, and strengthening
\nthe community\u2019s presence in public discussions that shape the United Kingdom.<\/p>\n
