From early afternoon until the end of the<br \/>\nday, men and women of different ages filled the hall with one clear purpose:<br \/>\nto decide, democratically, who should lead the next stage of the organisation.<\/p>\n<p>The vote confirmed the continuity of <strong>Clemente Chiquete<\/strong> as president<br \/>\nof the Union of Angolans in the United Kingdom. The result was more than an<br \/>\nadministrative choice; it was a demonstration of trust in the path of a leadership<br \/>\nthat has sought to balance <strong>transparency, social inclusion and engagement<br \/>\nwith the younger generation<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>In his address, the president acknowledged mistakes, but emphasised the progress<br \/>\nalready made. He highlighted as a priority a stronger <strong>connection with young<br \/>\npeople<\/strong>: working alongside them, listening to their ideas and creating safe<br \/>\nspaces for participation. The occasion was far more than a historic<br \/>\nanniversary; it was a reunion with memory, culture and the homesickness felt by those<br \/>\nwho are building their lives far from the land where they were born.<\/p>\n<p>Inside the hall, <strong>colourful fabrics, familiar smells and drums<\/strong><br \/>\ntransformed the London cold into a fragment of Luanda, Benguela, Huambo and so many<br \/>\nother cities. The presence of <strong>Ambassador Jos\u00e9 Patr\u00edcio<\/strong> added solemnity<br \/>\nto an evening marked by songs, traditional rhythms and moments of shared emotion that<br \/>\nrecalled the country which, half a century ago, won its freedom.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"uaru-figure text-center my-4\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"img-fluid rounded-4 shadow-sm\" src=\"https:\/\/uarucharity.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Picture2.jpg\" alt=\"Traditional Angolan dress in bright colours\" \/><figcaption class=\"small text-muted mt-2\">Dress inspired by Lunda and Bakongo cultures \u2013 a powerful symbol of pride and identity.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Among the many traditional outfits presented, one in particular caught everyone\u2019s eye.<br \/>\nIt combined elements of the <strong>Lunda<\/strong> and <strong>Bakongo<\/strong> cultures:<br \/>\na skirt made of printed fabrics such as <em>mulele ua jiponda<\/em>, <em>mulele ua xaxi<\/em><br \/>\nand <em>mulele ua tandu<\/em>, adorned with beads and intense colours. The posture of<br \/>\nthe woman wearing it \u2013 confident, calm and deeply rooted \u2013 turned the moment into a<br \/>\nvisual statement of belonging and resilience.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"uaru-figure text-center my-4\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"img-fluid rounded-4 shadow-sm\" src=\"https:\/\/uarucharity.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/1.jpg\" alt=\"Angolan fashion show with traditional dress\" \/><figcaption class=\"small text-muted mt-2\">Fashion show with traditional Angolan outfits during the 50 years of independence celebration.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The celebration was not just about aesthetics; it was also educational.<br \/>\nEvery outfit, every song and each conversation reminded us that Angolan<br \/>\nculture is not a souvenir from the past, but a living force that continues<br \/>\nto inspire, unite and educate both those who live in Angola and those who<br \/>\nare shaping their story in the diaspora.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><!-- 28 July community day --><\/p>\n<div class=\"uaru-section mb-5\">\n<h2 class=\"mb-3\">28 July: a new Day of the Angolan Community in the UK<\/h2>\n<p>If the 50th independence celebration spoke to the heart, the process that established<br \/>\n<strong>28 July as the Day of the Angolan Community in the United Kingdom<\/strong> spoke<br \/>\nto the mind and to our sense of collective responsibility. On a rainy day, the community<br \/>\norganised the largest democratic exercise ever seen in the Angolan diaspora:<br \/>\n<strong>1,144 participants<\/strong>, of whom 1,100 voted online and 44 in person.<\/p>\n<p>The choice of <strong>28 July<\/strong>, with 53.13% of the votes, reflects the desire to<br \/>\ncelebrate Angolan identity in an open, fair and participatory way. The president of<br \/>\nthe voting desk, <strong>Am\u00e2ndio Duarte<\/strong>, highlighted that the date recovers the<br \/>\npride of being Angolan and sets out a model of community governance that can inspire<br \/>\nother African diasporas.<\/p>\n<p>Observers from Cabo Verde and Mozambique were also present, reinforcing the broader<br \/>\nAfrican dimension of the moment. As one participant put it, the experience served as<br \/>\na \u201clighthouse\u201d for other migrant communities, showing that<br \/>\n<strong>participatory democracy strengthens bonds and creates a real sense of belonging<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>At the end of the day, between applause and tears, the words of<br \/>\n<strong>Anast\u00e1cio da Cruz<\/strong> summed up the feeling in the room:<br \/>\n<em>\u201cThe ghetto won because we chose hope over division.\u201d<\/em> From now on,<br \/>\n28 July will be dedicated to debates about cultural identity, performances<br \/>\nof Angolan music and educational activities for young people \u2013 a yearly<br \/>\n<strong>ritual of affirmation<\/strong> for the community.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><!-- Remembrance Day --><\/p>\n<section class=\"uaru-section mb-5\">\n<h2 class=\"mb-3\">Remembrance Day in Harrow: memory, sacrifice and inclusion<\/h2>\n<p>The participation of the Angolan community in <strong>Remembrance Day<\/strong> in Harrow<br \/>\nbrought another important layer to this edition: a reflection on the place of minorities<br \/>\nin the history of the United Kingdom. It is a powerful message for younger<br \/>\ngenerations, who learn that Angolan identity can walk hand in hand with civic<br \/>\nresponsibility in the country they now call home.<\/p>\n<p><!-- History of the community --><\/p>\n<div class=\"uaru-section mb-5\">\n<h2 class=\"mb-3\">How was this Angolan community in the UK built?<\/h2>\n<figure class=\"uaru-figure text-center my-4\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"img-fluid rounded-4 shadow-sm\" src=\"https:\/\/uarucharity.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Picture10.jpg\" alt=\"One of the pioneers of the Angolan community in the United Kingdom\" \/><figcaption class=\"small text-muted mt-2\">One of the faces that marked the early stages of the community\u2019s organisation.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The final part of this edition looks back and asks: <strong>how did we get here?<\/strong><br \/>\nThe answer runs through neighbourhoods such as Tottenham, Brixton, Paddington and<br \/>\nWembley, which in the 1980s became genuine places of refuge for those fleeing war<br \/>\nor seeking better opportunities.<\/p>\n<p>Tottenham was the territory of everyday survival, with shared houses and rooms<br \/>\nthat became trenches against loneliness. Brixton, with its African and Caribbean<br \/>\npulse, turned into the cultural heart where the diaspora learned to share both<br \/>\npain and achievement. Paddington became a family backyard \u2013 the arrival point for<br \/>\nmany asylum seekers and the birthplace of the first Angolan sports teams. Wembley,<br \/>\nfinally, symbolised victory: every document obtained was celebrated as if someone<br \/>\nhad scored in a packed stadium.<\/p>\n<p>The following decades were marked by difficulties with asylum procedures, economic<br \/>\nuncertainty and delays in benefits. But they were also years of<br \/>\n<strong>creativity and solidarity<\/strong>: football clubs, associations, places of<br \/>\nworship and cultural initiatives emerged, shaping the community \u201clike clay in the<br \/>\nhands of a potter\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>From 1997 onwards, changes to migration policy were a turning point. With new<br \/>\nopportunities to work, study and move more freely, the Angolan community stopped<br \/>\nbeing almost invisible and became an active part of London\u2019s landscape, contributing<br \/>\nin many areas of knowledge, culture and the economy.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><!-- Conclusion + PDF --><\/p>\n<div class=\"uaru-section uaru-conclusion mb-4\">\n<h2 class=\"mb-3\">From memory to action: what this edition tells us about the future<\/h2>\n<p>Seen together, the stories in this edition of UARU News show a community that has<br \/>\nlearned to <strong>participate, celebrate and question<\/strong>.
